London,UK: THE southside skyline changed this week as the new Sikh Gurdwara on Albert Drive was capped off with a gold dome.

The Scottish Sikh community were out in force at the Pollokshields site as construction for the new building – to be completed by March 2013 – reached the milestone marker on Thursday.

The new Gurdwara is the first purpose-built Sikh facility in the country, and will feature more space for prayers than the current building on Nithsdale Road, as well as language classes, social space and the Langar – a free kitchen.

The gold dome now taking pride of place on the building may have been built in Bristol, but it was painted in a depot in nearby Polmadie.

Surinder Singh, president of the Glasgow Gurdwara, said he looked forward to welcoming the wider southside community to its opening ceremony.

He continued: “This is a really exciting step in the building of this Gurdwara, which is at the heart of the Sikh community spirit and had always been a special place for Sikhs.

“It will be a place where people can come together to practice their faith, learn and socialise.

“This new building is a sign of progress for Sikhs in Scotland and I am forever grateful to all those who have helped us come this far.

“It is with the generous donations of people that we are able to make this fantastic new building and our fundraising efforts continue.

“I am in no doubt that this new building will grow to be a new landmark of the southside of Glasgow”.
